The Portage Lakes Career Center Capital Improvements Project expanded and modernized the school’s career and technical education facilities through 14,100 square feet of additions and renovations. Delivered through the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) method, the project included a 6,100-square-foot addition for a new Dental Assistant program, a 5,350-square-foot renovation of the existing welding lab, and a 2,650-square-foot welding addition.
The new Dental Assistant facility pioneered one of the few high school-level dental education programs in Ohio. The project involved procuring and installing specialized equipment, including seven fully equipped patient chairs with vacuum and water systems, a panoramic X-ray machine, and retractable lighting. In addition, the new facility provided two classrooms and two offices to support instruction and simulate real-world clinical settings.
The welding program was transformed into a state-of-the-art training facility through a combination of renovation and expansion. Enhancements included 32 new welding machines, custom-engineered dust collection systems, virtual reality welding simulators, a jib crane, and a plasma table cutter. The work also added new classroom and office spaces within the lab, further enhancing instructional capacity.
The success of the project was driven by close collaboration with Portage Lakes Career Center, proactive problem solving, and strong subcontractor performance. Consistent coordination throughout design and construction helped minimize potential issues while ensuring the project met both quality and scheduling objectives.
The completed facilities provide industry-focused learning environments that prepare students for careers in healthcare, manufacturing, and the skilled trades while reinforcing Portage Lakes Career Center’s position as a leader in innovative career and technical education.
