As part of our global mission trip program, Shook Construction sent eight employees to Mozambique, East Africa, in April 2022 to build new, on-campus teacher dormitories for a remote school. Though simple in nature, the project had an immense and immediate impact on the community of Mucombeze and was recently named a Global Best Projects Award Winner by Engineering News-Record (ENR). In January 2023, we will release a documentary about the trip in the hope of inspiring others to support the communities most in need.
Shook was awarded a Build Ohio Award for our effort to restore Dayton Phoenix Group's 630,000 SF manufacturing facility after it was hit by the Memorial Day tornadoes in 2019. For the last three years, a multitude of people from Shook and our great team of partners poured their hearts into rebuilding this facility. With no notice, no plans, and no budget set, the swift mobility of our team as well as out-of-the-box thinking were required to adapt to every challenge uncovered. Working ~600 days in the facility (with all but 45 being tenant-occupied) and yielding 300,000+ manhours, Shook and our subcontractors had zero lost time injuries and delivered a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility to our client. Thank you to DPG for turning to us in your time of need and being the most incredible client that became family, and to AGC of Ohio for recognizing the great effort of our team and honoring us with this award!
We are humbled and thrilled to announce that Shook has been named the 2022 Community Supporter of the Year by the Dayton Business Journal! From the launch of The Shook Foundation to executing our second company Mission Trip to numerous community outreach and workforce development initiatives across the company, this nomination is a testament to all our employees who live out our Mission each day, To Dramatically Improve the Communities We Serve.

Eight Shook associates recently traveled to Mozambique, East Africa to construct teacher apartments for a remote school. This was our second company Mission Trip in an effort to make our Mission global. Our Mission Trips send a group of Shook employees to a part of the globe where people truly lack the infrastructure that we can help provide. Not only do they assist a struggling community, but they also instill a global perspective in our employees, continuing to embolden our core values of Passion, Balance, Courage, Opportunity, Responsibility, and Fun. This project recently won an Engineering News-Record (ENR) Global Best Projects Award, one of just 34 projects throughout the world to receive the recognition.
We recently celebrated the groundbreaking of Reid Health's new medical office building in Connersville, Indiana. This 177,000-square-foot, $90 Million facility will include an emergency department, imaging, primary and specialty care services, and a helipad. We are excited to team with Skanska on this project to improve healthcare access for the residents of Fayette County. Congratulations, Reid Health, on reaching this great milestone for your new campus!
Brecksville-Broadview Heights PK-5 Elementary School
We recently celebrated the opening of Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District's new PreK-5 elementary school and fieldhouse. This 145,000 SF school consolidates the District's four existing elementary buildings and sits on approximately 55 acres. Unique features are incorporated throughout the building, including a stamped concrete courtyard with a functional pond and boardwalk, an interior corkscrew slide from the second floor to the media center, window alcove seats, and collaboration areas. Hexagonal shapes are also carried throughout the building in the windows and finishes to celebrate the school’s Bee mascot. The 33,000 SF fieldhouse attached to the school is jointly owned by the City Of Brecksville to house athletic tournaments and community events outside of school hours.
The results are in and Shook's Dayton office has been named a 2022 Best Places to Work Honoree through the Dayton Business Journal! Only 50 companies in the region received this honor, which was based solely on feedback offered through an employee survey. We feel truly thankful that our employees at all levels continuously strive to make Shook a top workplace.
Northwest Regional Water Treatment Plant Expansion
We are humbled to have the opportunity to work with the Greene County Sanitary Engineering Department (GCSED) to expand the capacity of their existing Northwest Regional Water Treatment Plant. On July 7, we broke ground on the upgrades that will include 4,000 cubic yards of concrete, 300 tons of rebar, 300 tons of process piping, over three miles of piping, and over 20 miles of wiring. It has been a pleasure collaborating with GCSED, Arcadis and AECOM on this project that will become one of the largest reverse osmosis membrane softening plants in Ohio when complete.
On June 22, 2012, our Raleigh office opened its doors. This year, we celebrate 10 years in the region.
