At Shook, our safety program is built on genuine care for our team members, clients, trade partners, and the communities we serve. It’s woven into who we are and is part of our culture, ensuring that everyone onsite works safely and returns home each night.
Our S.T.E.P. SAFELY program highlights each team member’s responsibility to:
Speak Up by asking questions and pointing out at-risk behaviors
Teach why an action is unsafe and provide a safe solution
Encourage others by celebrating safety accomplishments
Protect themselves and those around them by planning ahead, following proper procedure, and staying alert

How We Lead Our Safety Culture
Safety Team
Shook’s dedicated team of certified safety professionals leads the implementation and continuous improvement of our safety program. They set the strategic direction that keeps our people safe and our clients’ projects running efficiently. The Safety Team monitors safety performance, provides ongoing training to both Shook teammates and trade partners to reinforce safety practices, and guides the development of site-specific safety plans. They also perform risk assessments and recurring jobsite safety visits. Their work keeps safety at the forefront, empowering our teams to deliver projects with care.
Operations-Led Safety Council
Our Safety Council brings together operations teammates – Superintendents, Skilled Trades, Project Managers, and more – who collaborate with our Safety Team and leadership to evaluate safety protocols and enhance on-site safety performance. The Council aims to inspire, educate, and unite Shook’s team members, fostering a culture grounded in proactive safety and personal accountability.
How We Manage Our Safety Program
Shook has put in place extensive policies, training, and procedures to put our Safety Program into action. We use daily pre-task planning sessions, ongoing safety inspections, weekly safety meetings, safety seminars, special equipment training, safety manual reviews, and more to ensure the safety of our people and provide outstanding service to our clients.
Safety Begins in Planning
Shook’s safety management begins in the preconstruction phase, well before any work begins. Our teams develop a site-specific safety plan for each project, examining the site and scope of work. All trade partners are also required to develop a site-specific plan prior to mobilizing.
Each day before work begins, all crews complete a pre-task plan to review and discuss activities to be performed, identify associated hazards, determine mitigation measures, identify coordination needed with other trades, and confirm all necessary tools and PPE are properly inspected and available to complete the task.
Training
Shook field supervisors receive comprehensive training in fall prevention, excavation and trenching, hazard awareness, first aid, CPR, and other essential safety practices.
Site Inspection Programs
Our jobsites undergo formal daily, weekly, and monthly inspections conducted by project leadership. In addition, the Shook Safety Team performs weekly inspections across various projects to provide a fresh perspective of the site review, assist project teams, and offer additional safety resources as needed.
Skilled Trade Engagement
Shook holds quarterly engagement sessions with our skilled trade teammates to exchange ideas, share updates, and discuss company and job-specific safety performance. By engaging our frontline teammates directly in safety conversations, we gain valuable insights, reinforce best practices, and continuously improve how we plan and execute work in the field.
Toolbox Talks
On‑site safety discussions help our crews focus on the day’s tasks, understand potential hazards, and reinforce safe work practices. Their brief and conversational nature raises awareness and encourages open communication around critical safety topics and behaviors.
Substance Abuse Programs
Our program allows for pre-employment, post-accident, “for cause,” and random testing, with all employees subject to random testing.
Safety Data Monitoring
Shook’s internal safety dashboard tracks key safety metrics to give our teams insight into our performance. This visibility allows us to make informed decisions and continuously strengthen our safety performance.
Medical Training and Protocols
Our Safety Program is dedicated to protecting everyone on the jobsite. But should an injury or illness occur, our teams are prepared to immediately respond. First aid and medical protocols are included in each site-specific safety plan and team members are trained in first aid, CPR, and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
Award-Winning Safety Program
Shook’s premier Safety Program has been recognized with numerous awards, including The Construction Safety Excellence Award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America. The Construction Safety Excellence Award is among the industry’s highest safety recognitions. The award recognizes companies that have developed and implemented premier safety and risk control programs. It showcases organizations that have achieved continuous improvement and maintenance in their safety and health management systems.
