Dayton Phoenix Group — Disaster Recovery

Based in Dayton, Ohio, since 1939, Dayton Phoenix Group (DPG) has been a leading supplier of electrical and locomotive components for industrial and railway customers. Following a series of tornadoes that caused severe structural damage to the facility, Shook mobilized field teams the next morning to begin debris removal and restore safe site access. Exterior walls had collapsed inward and outward, large sections of the roof were missing or caved in, and rooftop units – some weighing up to 28,000 pounds – were torn loose and dragged across the roof, damaging structural steel and utilities. Three units were never recovered.

Through real-time engineering and rapid-response construction, Shook restored 120,000 square feet of the facility to a weather-tight condition, allowing production to resume just 40 days after the storm. Remaining operations were temporarily relocated and brought online at an alternate site.
With much of the building vacated, Shook completed additional repairs along with the construction of an upgraded facility. The program included:

• 48,835 SF of new office space
• 2,100 SF of QA/QC offices and labs
• 30,450 SF of new engineering labs
• Renovation of the former office area into staff support spaces
• A new cafeteria

As the lead entity in the design-build partnership, Shook contracted directly with the design team and with trade partners selected through a competitive bid process.
