Dayton Metro Library — Segment II, III, IV Projects

Dayton Metro Library selected Shook Construction to manage construction for Segments II, III, and IV of its Libraries for a Smarter Future facilities plan, a major capital improvement program designed to modernize library services across the region. The program included the construction of 13 new libraries and the renovation of two existing branches, with facilities ranging from 6,000 to 27,000 square feet.

Each library was designed as a flexible community hub featuring:

• Themed children’s areas
• Dedicated Teen Edge spaces for middle and high school students
• Enclosed adult reading rooms
• Group study rooms
• Larger meeting rooms accessible after library hours for community use
• Family restrooms
• Specially commissioned artwork by local artists
• Updated landscaping
• Technology upgrades, including security systems, projectors, TVs, computers, and automated book sorters

Shook served as Construction Manager Agent, coordinating multiple new construction and renovation projects across occupied and space-constrained sites. Careful planning, communication, and sequencing helped maintain operations while delivering high-quality, community-focused facilities.

Each completed library achieved LEED certification, reflecting Dayton Metro Library’s commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and long-term community value. Together, the projects transformed the library system’s physical footprint and created modern, accessible spaces that support learning, technology access, collaboration, and civic engagement throughout the Dayton region.
