The Neuse River RRF (Resource Recovery Facility) Treatment Project was developed as part of the City of Raleigh’s broader biosolids improvements program, which upgraded aging equipment, increased treatment capacity for the growing region, and incorporated advanced anaerobic digestion to produce biogas for renewable energy generation. A new sidestream treatment system was needed to remove excess nitrogen and phosphorus from dewatered filtrate flows before returning the treated water to the plant’s main treatment stream.
Shook’s work included:
- New 130-foot by 60-foot cast-in-place concrete treatment tank housing diffused aeration equipment, screening equipment, sludge collection systems, and vertical shaft mixers
- New filtrate pump station to convey incoming filtrate flows to the sidestream treatment process
- New service building for RAS pumps, blowers, and electrical equipment
- New clarifier
- Site improvements
- Exposed and underground process piping
- Electrical and SCADA upgrades
The completed improvements enhance Raleigh’s ability to manage nutrient removal, support efficient biosolids treatment, and improve long-term wastewater treatment performance while advancing the City’s investment in sustainable infrastructure.
