This project expanded the Town of Smithfield’s water treatment capacity from 6.2 MGD to 8.3 MGD, strengthening the community’s ability to meet current and future water demands.
Major improvements included:
- New 5-million-gallon water reservoir
- Replacement of two raw water and three settled water pumps
- Flash-mix improvements
- New sedimentation basin and filter
- New filter air scour system for three existing filters
- New 1-million-gallon clearwell
- Replacement of three high-service pumps
- New 500,000-gallon backwash holding basin
- Powdered activated carbon system
- Chemical piping improvements
- New sludge dewatering screw press
- SCADA system improvements
- Associated site work, yard piping, and electrical improvements
The completed improvements provided Smithfield with expanded treatment capacity, improved process reliability, and modernized infrastructure to support safe, efficient, and resilient water service for the growing community.
