The Two River Utilities Water Treatment Facility project included major process upgrades designed to improve treatment performance, reliability, and operational efficiency for the 12 MGD facility in Gastonia, North Carolina. Shook self-performed key portions of the work, including sedimentation basin upgrades and installation of critical treatment equipment.

Major improvements included:

  • Sedimentation basin upgrades
  • Stainless steel baffle wall installation
  • Inclined plate settlers
  • Sludge removal equipment
  • Mixing equipment
  • New FRP bulk chemical storage tanks and day tanks
  • Chemical transfer and metering pumps
  • Complete SUEZ ultrafiltration membrane treatment system
  • Associated pumps, piping, instrumentation, pretreatment, chemical treatment, backwash, and clean-in-place systems


Because the facility remained operational throughout construction, Shook worked closely with the construction manager, owner, and plant operations team to plan shutdowns, coordinate tie-ins, and sequence work around active treatment processes. Look-ahead scheduling and weekly coordination meetings helped identify potential operational impacts early and allowed the team to execute shutdown activities smoothly.

The completed improvements strengthened Two River Utilities’ water treatment capabilities while supporting reliable plant operations and long-term infrastructure performance.
