Size
1 MGD plus a 1,200 SF Building Addition
This project expanded and modernized Pamlico County’s existing Kershaw Water Treatment Plant in Oriental, North Carolina, to provide a more advanced level of treatment and improve finished water quality.
Major improvements included:
- 1,200-square-foot masonry addition
- Three new softeners, two decoloration vessels, and associated face piping
- New laboratory space
- Decommissioning and removal of existing softeners
- Replacement of media in two filter vessels
- Upgrades from pneumatic actuators to electric actuators
- New prefabricated chemical building for chlorine and liquid ammonium sulfate systems
- New 400-linear-foot chlorine contact loop
- New aerator
- Recoating of existing detention tanks
One key constructability challenge involved installing new treatment vessels within the building addition after the designed openings were found to be insufficient. Shook coordinated a custom fabrication solution with the supplier, allowing construction to continue without leaving the roof open or delaying the schedule.
Shook self-performed major portions of the work, including concrete, underground piping, steel platform installation, equipment and vessel installation, chemical building installation, chemical piping and tubing, above ground piping, carpentry, and site work.
The completed improvements enhance treatment performance, modernize critical systems, and provide more efficient and reliable water treatment infrastructure.
