Improvements to the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD)’s Southerly Wastewater Treatment Center included a series of upgrades spanning 10 years designed to improve treatment performance, reliability, and long-term infrastructure resilience. Spanning multiple treatment processes and facility systems, the work required careful planning, sequencing, and coordination within an active plant environment.
Major project components included:
- First Stage Aeration Improvements: Replacement of fine bubble diffuser systems, renovations to blowers and compressors, and exterior improvements to the existing compressor building using concrete masonry unit (CMU) construction.
- Second Stage Settling Improvements: Renovation of 10 existing circular clarifiers, including new mechanisms, structural repairs, and new effluent launder systems.
- Building Demolition and Utility Relocation: Demolition of an obsolete incinerator building, along with utility replacement and relocation of chemical feed systems.
- Second Stage Aeration Upgrades: Replacement of fine bubble diffuser systems, renovations to blowers and compressors, and replacement of various flow control gates.
Additional work across the program included column repairs, electrical infrastructure improvements, primary tank additions, settling tank repairs, tunnel repairs, and filter effluent improvements. Through phased execution and close coordination with NEORSD, the Southerly improvements strengthened wastewater treatment operations, extended the life of critical infrastructure, and supported reliable service for the region.
