The Utley Creek Water Reclamation Facility Odor Control Upgrades project improved odor management, operational reliability, and long-term facility performance for the rapidly growing Town of Holly Springs, NC. As general contractor, Shook delivered critical upgrades at the Town’s sole wastewater treatment facility while maintaining full plant operations throughout construction.
Major improvements included:
- New odor control biofilter and carbon absorber
- Associated odor control piping
- New aluminum odor control covers at the influent pump station and junction boxes
- New dumpster building at the influent pump station
- Replacement of two bar screens with a shaftless screw conveyor and a grit cyclone
- New MIC coating system applied to junction boxes, the influent pump station, two wet wells, and a manhole
A key challenge was completing the work while protecting and maintaining operation of the existing influent pump station, headworks, and active influent force mains. Because the facility is the Town’s only wastewater treatment plant, Shook developed a bypassing approach – including 24” and 48” influent force mains – that maintained full operational capacity during construction.
The project was completed with strong safety and workforce participation results, including zero incidents, zero accidents, no lost-time reports, and significant MWBE vendor and minority workforce participation. The completed improvements helped Holly Springs manage odor, protect critical infrastructure, and support continued community growth.
