Topping Out

Miami Valley SE Addition Topping Out Ceremony Takes Place

The last piece of structural steel went up on Miami Valley Hospital's new Southeast addition on Monday, Sept. 14, during a topping out ceremony. The new LEED Certified 12-story, 484,000 SF addition will have 178 private patient rooms and house all cardiac-related services as well as an orthopedic and spinal center. A Topping Out ceremony is held when the last steel beam is placed at the top of a high rise project. A tree is placed on the beam to represent that there have been no injuries on the site, to symbolize green building and growth and to bring good luck to the hospital. An American flag was tied to the beam and waved in the sky on the beautiful September day. The beam was painted white and signed by the Iron Workers, the Skanska Shook Team, MVH employees and Premier Health Alliance representatives before it was hoisted into the air. The highlight of the ceremony took place when the steel was hoisted up and put into place by the "raising-gang", the iron workers who actually set the steel in place. There is more work to be done and the ironworkers will be involved in some aspects of it, but the heavy work is done for them.
