Shook Makes Big Moves with Print Media
Shook Construction and our joint venture partner, Skanska, were featured in the September 13, 2010 issue of the Engineer News-Record (ENR) magazine. The cover article, entitled Prefabulous Hospital Delivery, highlights the multi-trade prefabrication of hospital components used for the $152 million Southeast Addition at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
The Skanska Shook joint venture takes prefabrication to another level. The 178 identical patient rooms and 120 overhead corridor utility racks of the patient tower were prefabricated in a nearby 35,000 SF warehouse before installed on the jobsite. The components–from the full MEP, floor and wall tiles, sinks and handrails of the entire bathroom to the cabinets, pull-out guest bed unit and sinks–of each hospital room were completed in a warehouse. Once complete, these prefabricated units were delivered to the jobsite and hoisted up by a tower crane into the 12-story hospital.
The process became so fine-tuned that at one point, 33 patient bathroom pods were completed in 8 hours and 30,000 SF of patient floor was completed in only 1.5 weeks. This allowed two months to be cut from the schedule, saving 2% of the construction cost. By having an integrated team of 18 workers complete the prefabrication in a clean, orderly, temperature controlled warehouse, this process proved to be safer, faster and more cost-effective than traditional construction methods. The $152 million project is more than 90% complete with a projected completion date in October.
