Renewable Energy Boilers Arrive on Job Site

Two biomass boilers arrived at the Eastern Illinois University project site in Charleston. These will be constructed at the university’s new energy center. A 190-ton crane and lifting beam from Chicago and trailers from south of St. Louis were used to transport these massive, energy saving boilers.

The boilers will be inside the new Central Steam Plant, which will replace the university’s coal plant originally built in the 1930’s. Both of the 40,000 BTU/hour boilers will be attached to a gasifier. The gasifier will turn wood chips into a heated gas to fuel the boilers, which will generate electricity for the entire campus. One boiler will be at 150 psig (pounds per square inch gauge) steam and the other one at 600 psig steam at 550 degrees discharged to steam turbine. There will be a newly constructed 1.1 mile steam tunnel system that will lead to the existing plant. Also, the project will include two additional 50,000 BTU/hour boilers which will back up the woodchip boilers with redundant gas or fuel supply.

Originally, this project was aiming for a LEED Silver rating; however, it is now on track to obtain a LEED Gold certification. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
