EIU Project Breaks Ground this Month
Shook is breaking ground this week on a new energy center for Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The University will decommission their existing coal plant originally built in the 1930’s in favor of the most recent technology. The plant will house two 40,000 lb/hr biomass boilers to provide steam for the entire campus. These biomass boilers are capable of using wood chips or sawgrass as a fuel source; the latest in renewable energy design. In addition to providing steam, the plant will also generate electricity in two ways. First a 550 kW turbine generator also powered by the biomass steam, and a solar panel array that will add another 20 kW. These electrical power sources will not only supply plant power but also dispense excess power to the grid. The plant will also have redundant steam generation capabilities with two 50,000 lb/hr additional boilers capable of burning natural gas or fuel oil. The energy savings have been guaranteed as a component of this contract.
The plant is scheduled to carry a LEED Silver rating and is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
