Dayton Public Schools Go Gold![]() It's official!! Two of Dayton Public Schools' buildings have received their LEED Gold certifications: Edison PK-8 and Meadowdale High School.
How was this accomplished? Here are a few fun facts: Energy Saving Strategies: Each school utilizes energy saving strategies by reducing water usage, electricity and gas, which will be better for the environment and have cost benefits in the long run for the District. Specific examples include:Meadowdale High School incorporates waterless urinals to help reduce water usage. Both Meadowdale High School and Edison PK-8 provide a controlled lighting system and high efficiency HVAC systems to reduce electricity. Reduce Impact to Environment: To reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emissions into the environment, the two buildings are set up to encourage alternative transportation, such as bicycle use, public transportation, and low-emitting vehicles. To accomplish this, sites were chosen near bus stops, bicycle racks were provided, designated "low-emitting vehicle" parking was provided, and parking spaces were limited in number. Construction Waste: During construction, project teams paid close attention to keeping track of environmental effects of construction by managing storm water pollution control, soil erosion and indoor air quality, as well as recycling construction waste. Dayton Public Schools now is paying it forward by adding a new curriculum throughout the District that incorporates 10 hours of classes covering the effects of energy usage, protection of the environment, and how LEED has helped improve building efficiency. |
