SustainabilityAt Shook, we believe the protection of the environment is an important element of our corporate culture and that no process is so important that we can not find a safe, healthy and environmentally sound way of carrying it out. Job SitesProper soil erosion measures are utilized, safeguarding streams and rivers from fine sediments that can upset their ecosystems. When constructing projects in environmentally sensitive areas, such as critical dunes or wetlands, we work with local, state, and federal agencies to ensure strict enforcement of all applicable laws, ordinances, and directives. We routinely segregate construction waste for recycling when applicable on project job sites. This material is sent to recycling facilities or used in recycling programs and diverted from landfills. Corporate OfficesShook has instituted an in-house recycling program, including recycling paper products, aluminum cans and plastic containers, empty ink cartridges as well as purchasing recycled office supplies. Energy management has always been a focus for Shook. Reducing energy costs has been a long term program and vigilant stewardship that has been handed down through generations of Shook leadership. PersonnelTraining and upgrading professional skills is a cornerstone of Shook culture. We have obtained LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for individuals within the company. LEED promotes a whole-building approach to sustainability by recognizing performance in five key areas of human and environmental health: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. |
