Community Involvement

Giving back to the communities in which we work has been a long standing tradition with the company. We get involved by providing donations of our time, money, materials and labor. We organize group opportunities with different causes and charities and encourage employees to volunteer in our community.

Some of the recent events in which we have been involved include:

Habitat for Humanity
 Habitat for Humanity brings families and communities in need together with volunteers and resources to build decent, affordable housing for low-income households. Since their founding in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 200,000 houses with families in need, becoming a true world leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing.

 

March of Dimes - March for Babies
When Franklin D. Roosevelt founded the March of Dimes in 1938, he chose  research to be one of the cornerstones of the effort to defeat polio. Seventeen years later the polio vaccine was declared safe and highly effective. The March of Dimes research investments continue to be one of the cornerstones of the March of Dimes mission. Their programs fund several different types of research, all aimed at preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Shook has participated in this annual walk since 2006.


Rebuilding Together Cleveland
A team of Shook personnel spent their Saturday working with Rebuilding Together Cleveland (RTC). The RTC mission is to preserve and revitalize the homes in Cleveland’s low-income neighborhoods. Focusing primarily on the elderly and homes with small children, RTC believes that everyone should be able to live in a home that provides safety, warmth and independence. Shook’s team led a group of more than 50 volunteers in the renovation and overall facelift of an existing home on Cleveland’s west side.


Fore! the Kids Golf Outing

In August 2010, the Circle of Friends held its 3rd Annual Fore! the Kids Golf Outing to benefit University Hospitals Rainbow Babies Children’s Hospital. The Circle of Friends is the charitable wing of the Children’s Hospital and is made up of all the different individuals and organizations that put together events to benefit Rainbow Babies. Skanska Shook was one of the key organizers and sponsors for the outing, which proved to be an excellent success.


The Valley Classic
The Valley Classic is the top fundraising event for the Miami Valley Hospital Foundation in Dayton, Ohio. Skanska Shook has been a key sponsor for four years and has made a commitment for an additional three years. The Foundation raises funds to enhance the quality of life for patients and families by providing greater comfort and patient education materials, as well as creating hospital programs that serve the greater community. Skanska Shook team members volunteer throughout the year to assist the Foundation’s programs.

Wilberforce University
Two energetic young students spearheaded a project to create a gathering place outside of the Allen Commons Student Union. Shook Construction is proud to have provided the equipment and workers to help. Click here for the full article and news clip.
